Keynote Speaker

Christina Thanasoula – GREECE

“Designing light is an ongoing learning process that never ends.”

Christina is a freelance Stage Lighting Designer based in Greece. She is a graduate of the Department of Theatre Studies, (Athens University, 2000) with a Master of Arts in Advanced Theatre Practice -strand of Lighting Design- obtained from the Royal Central School of Speech and Drama (London, UK, 2002). Her career path began right after her graduation from Central, working as an assistant lighting technician in the warehouse of a London based lighting rental company called Fourth Phase. These early years experiences made her commit to stage lighting. After 2 years in London, she came back to Greece and her professional development flourished working along with Emmy award winner lighting designer Eleftheria Deko. She enjoys both the technical and the artistic nature of light, to her it feels like these two are communicating vessels. Lighting is an art and a craft.

Women though, are mostly welcomed as artists but excluded from technical positions. Unfortunately, she is the only woman in Greece who has ever worked in a high-profile technical position in the field of stage lighting: for the past 2 years she was Head of the Lighting Department of the Hellenic Festival, one of the largest Theatre and Dance Festivals in Greece, hosting more than 70 performances over a period of 2 months.

She also finds very challenging the role of the educator: she teaches stage lighting design for beginners, designing workshops that offer both theoretical and hands-on experience.

Keynote Speaker

Clementine Fletcher-Smith – UK

“Light Architecture is about transformation. The coming together of the solid and the immaterial to create something that transforms perception, atmosphere and subsequently people’s behaviour.”

Clementine studied Architecture at the University of Newcastle upon Tyne. Her architectural education gave her a strong understanding of spatial experience and a rigorous design approach. She joined Speirs Major in 2005, completed an MSc in Light & Lighting at The Bartlett, UCL in 2009, and became an Associate Partner in 2014. In 2020 she was named Partner of Speirs Major.

She has extensive experience in designing interior and exterior lighting, as well as masterplanning projects. She applies knowledge and experience gained on one project to another and comes to each new project type without preconceptions. Clementine’s particular expertise lies in organisation and communication: to explain, persuade and create cohesion amongst the team.

Key projects that she has worked on include a citywide strategy for Durham, which resulted in the Durham Market Square public realm project and Durham Lumiere light festival; Maggie’s Centre North East; the Jewish Community Centre in North London and The Macallan whisky distillery in Speyside.

Keynote Speaker

Clara Daguin – FRANCE

Clara Daguin was born in France and grew up in California’s Silicon Valley. Fittingly, her approach draws from both of these formative contexts: a mix of savoir- faire and technology, embroidery and electronics, the organic and the artificial. She uses fashion as a vector for examining how technology evolves alongside the body, engaging with present circumstances and future realities: digitalization, dematerialization, surveillance. Using light as a material, she leans into the esoteric: conjuring up energies and flows, externalising our invisible infrastructures, and alluding to the way our anatomies secretly operate beneath our clothes. Clara Daguin created her eponymous label in 2017 after her participation in the Hyères International Fashion Festival. In addition to her own designs, she collaborates with artists, researchers and institutions — Google, Baccarat, Nike. In 2023 she is the winner of the Grand Prix de la Création de la ville de Paris in the Fashion category, and goes on to win the Innovation Prize alongside the label Fabriqué à Paris. She is based in Paris, France. More about Clara: https://www.claradaguin.com/about
