Join us for an exclusive behind-the-scenes visit to the National Theatre, exploring one of the UK’s most iconic performance venues from a lighting perspective. This is a fantastic opportunity to meet members of the National Theatre Lighting Team and acclaimed Lighting Designer Paule Constable, currently lighting Ballet Shoes.

4:00 PM – Meet outside the Dorfman Theatre
We’ll begin with a chat in the public area above Drum Road.
The NT LX team will share insights into the workings of the building:

  • How and what gets built on site
  • The different spaces and rehearsal rooms
  • Where the lighting kit comes from – resources vs basic rigs

 

4:30 PM – Wolfson Gallery & Richardson Room

Continue the discussion with members of the NT lighting team:

  • The journey from white card to press night
  • A look at LX plans and light-up props

Understanding the roles within the LX department


5:00 PM – Meet Paule Constable

We’ll be joined by Paule to hear about her creative process and the lighting design for Ballet Shoes.
Followed by an open Q&A session.


6:00 PM – Drinks at the Understudy Bar

Relax and debrief the day! A table will be reserved for our group.

Paule Constable

Paule Constable is an acclaimed British lighting designer whose work spans theatre, opera, and dance. She studied English and Drama at Goldsmiths, University of London, and trained in lighting design while working in the music industry, where she developed her distinctive visual style. Constable has a long-standing association with the National Theatre and with Matthew Bourne’s company, New Adventures, and is a founding member of the collective Freelancers Make Theatre Work, which advocates for sustainability and better working conditions across the performing arts.

At the National Theatre, her extensive credits include Nye (2025 and 2024, also at the Wales Millennium Centre), Ballet Shoes, Till the Stars Come Down, The Confessions, The Normal Heart, The Visit, The Ocean at the End of the Lane, Follies, Nine Night, Angels in America, The Light Princess, Table, This House, The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time, Phèdre, War Horse (also on Broadway), and His Dark Materials.

It aims to promote their passion and achievements, narrate their career path and goals. It aims to celebrate their work and increase the profile of women working in lighting to help encourage, support and inspire the next generation.
